Compound Measures

Calculating speed should be fairly straightforward using the speed distance time triangle.  But you do have to be careful about units. For example if you’re asked to work out a speed in kilometres per hour, convert distance to kilometres and time to hours then calculate the speed.

Also, remember that the word ‘per’ mean divide by. This might help you work out other compound measures by looking at the units.

If you're stuck on compound measures, BBC Bitesize might help.
We also looked at distance-time graphs in class.  Remember that gradient represents speed. So when the graph is flat (ie zero gradient), speed is zero (ie not moving).  BBC Bitesize has a summary of this topic.

If you’re interested in speed-time graphs you can read about them here. These are covered in more detail in science.
