Completing the Square

In class we learnt how to 'complete the square', which is a way of rewriting a quadratic expression. We then talked about how to solve quadratic equations by completing the square.

If you need some help on this, look at the lesson on MyMaths.  It is under Algebra > Equations - Quadratic > Completing the Square.

We now have three methods for solving quadratic equations:
1. Factorising (including difference of two squares). This is the quickest method but is not always possible!
2. The quadratic formula.
3. Completing the square.

Here's your homework sheet.

Next lesson we will look at how completing the square can help us sketch graphs. It shows us where the vertex (minimum or maximum) of a graph is.
